International IC ? Taipei ? Conference Proceedings 1 Technical overview of IEEE 1394 Abstract This presentation provides a basic technical overview of the 1394 standard. Topics include background, protocols, cable, power, physical layer, arbitration, link layer, and future direc- tions. Since the original FireWire discussions and designs at Apple Computer during the middle 1980s, the IEEE 1394 stan- dard has been a widely anticipated, high-bandwidth, reliable peer-to-peer with broad implications throughout the electron- ics industry. Many designers are just beginning to develop us- ing the specification; this basic primer is aimed at this group.
