AKM 20-bit codec operates from single, dual supply

Designed to operate from either a single 2.3V to 3.6V power supply or dual-supply voltage, the AK4565 20-bit multifunction audio codec from Asahi Kasei Microsystems features microphone input capability and low power consumption for portable A/V devices and hands-free systems.

Using the dual-voltage mode, the digital portion of the chip can operate from voltages as low as 1.5V. Advanced power management allows individual functional blocks of the device to be shut down and restarted as needed.

The AK4565 has two analog inputs, each with four input selectors, PGA, ALC circuit, and ADC. The external 20dB fixed gain preamplifiers enable PDAs to record voice messages and store them digitally in memory for later playback. The ALCs ensure proper input levels for accurate recording.

The entire microphone section can be bypassed, allowing for mono recording of internal or external line level sources. When used in cell phones, this feature could be used to record telephone conversations or audio from external sources.

Both the ADCs and stereo DACs can operate at frequencies from 8kHz to 50kHz, allowing the device to produce high-fidelity stereo or mono audio. The DACs also feature built-in de-emphasis filters, further reducing implementation costs.

Available in a 28-pin VSOP housing, the AK4565 has a dynamic range and SNR of 91dB at 2.5V. It also supports 20-bit MSB, LSB and I2S audio interface formats.
