Trimple GPS module capable of 40h of continuous operation

The company announced at the Embedded Systems Conference the availability of its Lassen SQ mini GPS receiver module for mobile devices. The module consumes 100mW during operation and is claimed to be capable of continuos operation for more than 40h via two penlight batteries.

Measuring 26-by-26-by-6mm, the Lassen SQ can easily fit GPS functionality into mobile devices such as cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and notebook and tablet PCs,, as well as in-vehicle tracking systems and portable instrumentation devices.

The GPS module incorporates the company's FirstGPS technology along with a miniature board containing a GPS hardware core based on the Colossus RF ASIC and IO-S DSP design. It also contains a 32-bit RISC CPU, and offers onboard data storage via Flash memory.

The company offers the Lassen SQ in three models depending on the applicationan ultra-compact embedded antenna, a compact unpackaged antenna or a compact packaged antenna with a magnetic-mount for moveable installation.

Development kits are also offered which include the Lassen SQ GPS module mounted on an interface board, a magnetic-mount antenna, an ac/dc power adapter, a serial interface cable, a reference manual, and GPS toolkit software for communication with the GPS module.
