Broadcom GbE transceiver dissipates lesser power

Broadcom Corp. has announced that it sampling the BCM5464S, the fifth member of its QuadSquad family of Gigabit quad transceivers designed for high-port density GbE switches and routers. Featuring a 0.135m Gigabit PHY architecture, the BCM5464S dissipates <0.7W per port - a 30 percent reduction over the company's existing GbE PHYs.

The device is aimed at reducing system costs by simplifying typical high-density board designs, and to facilitate the deployment of GbE bandwidth to the desktop. Additionally, this device features a choice of reduced pin count serdes or SGMII for the MAC interface, and a choice of copper or fiber for the media interface.

The on-chip serdes interface provides a four-pin connection to the switch/MAC, while the SGMII interface is an alternative six-pin MAC/PHY interface. Switching between copper and fiber media can be accomplished either automatically or through software control.

For legacy switch/MACs, the BCM5464S supports the IEEE 802.3 standard GMII and Reduced GMII (RGMII) interfaces, with advanced timing mode, which provides a DLL-based delay for receive and transmit clocks, eliminating the need for timing delay traces required by the RGMII specification.

As with other members of the QuadSquad line, the BCM5464S features Ethernet@WireSpeed technology that enables equipment manufactured using the transceiver to auto-negotiate to the maximum speed possible over an impaired cable plant.
