STMicro R/W channel IC supports vertical recording

STMicroelectronics' "Leonardo" chip is claimed by the company to be the first R/W channel IC in the market to support vertical recording for HDDs and is manufactured using 130nm CMOS technology, enabling the IC to have low power dissipation and extend the battery life of portable devices.

The IC contains a pattern dependent detector to allow a drive to continuously adapt to both data and media variations, increasing both the areal density and the production yield of drives. In addition all loops for minimum loss of lock even in noisy conditions.

An Interpolated Timing Recovery Loop (ITR) is also included to allow the use of higher-latency, lower power dissipation ADC, maintaining the same overall system performance as Flash-ADC based read/write channels. The new ITR scheme also allows fast portability and simpler debugging of the timing loop algorithm.

The Leonardo chip also supports a data rate of 850Mbps and features a 10-bit RLL code with parity and low error propagation for better formatting efficiency. It also extends support to various types of Self ServoWrite schemes, adapting to the needs of different designs, lowering both startup and volume manufacturing costs.
