National Semiconductor Corp. has announced the release of a series of mixed-signal power and lighting management ICs for use in handheld devices.

For lighting management, the LP3933 and LP3936 offer programmability and features such as 'fun lighting' and camera 'flash' support. The LP3935, LP3938, LP3941, LP3945, and LP3946 analog power management ICs offer programmable Li-ion and NiMH battery charging functions and integrate linear regulators, LED drivers, system startup, and control circuits.

The device will be offered in small LLPs and laminate CSPs but will then move to the company's Microfil packaging, which will be up to seven times smaller than conventional packaging.

The LP3933 provides display lighting control and drive for "clam-shell" or flip-phone mobile phones that typically have a camera, one or two RGB LEDs, a main display, and a sub/CallerID display. It integrates a boost regulator and PWM lighting control functions, and is able to drive up to six white LEDs and two sets of RGB LEDs.

The IC is controlled over an SPI serial interface and is housed in a 32-pin Laminate CSP. The LP3936 has all the functions of the LP3933 with only one RGB indicator LED driver function.

The LP3935 includes seven programmable LDO linear regulators that provide low noise, on/off control, low current consumption, and high power supply rejection to ensure minimal interference between each supply. The 48-pin LPP device also includes a Li-ion/NiMH battery charger, USB transceiver, I?C serial interface, and two LED drivers.

The LP3938 is an upgraded version of the LP3935 and features an improved charger, one extra linear regulator, and a TCXO buffer.

Combining 11 LDO regulators, the LP3941 represents the highest level of integration among the new products. The IC also features an RGB LED driver, Li-ion/NiMH battery charger, back-up battery charger, RTC-LDO, and two comparators with an extensive system monitoring and control features.

The LP3945 and LP3946 are Li-ion/NiMH battery charging systems suitable for a range of portable battery-operated equipment. Both are shipped in 14-pin LLPs with the LP3945 programmable via an I?C interface, whereas the LP3946 is pre-programmed at the factory.
