austriamicrosystems has launched what it claims is the most flexible low-cost digital audio chip on the market. The enhanced version the AS3520 music decoder IC includes an extended software stack to deliver a self-contained digital audio player which even fits into a mobile phone.

The reference player needs 30 percent less PCB space than the smallest competing design. In addition, its external component count is 65 percent less than its nearest competitor. The product's digital equalizer eliminates the acoustic restrictions of small earphones, offering rich, crystal-clear sound on the road.

The AS3520 mobile music chip comes in a 100 pin CTBGA package measuring 10-by-10-by-1.2mm. It supports all standard sampling rates from 8kHz to 48kHz and is capable of playing back MP3 files at up to 320Kbps, WMA and AAC files at up to 256Kbps.

Because of the product's self-configuring dc-dc converter, any supply voltage between 1V and 5.5V is suitable for operation of the device. Three separate built-in regulators are used for internal analog and digital circuitry as well as for external auxiliary devices.

The AS3520 is priced at approximately $10 per device in 10,000-unit quantities.
