Mobile technology remains fruitful

Yoshizawa: Renesas will provide solutions to meet the application side of mobile phones.

Renesas Technology Hong Kong Ltd will focus on the fast growing area of mobile, digital consumer, networking and automotive electronics in China. The company's forecast indicates a 14 percent growth perspective in China's electronic industry (end product) this year, with major contributions coming from data processing (16 percent) and communications (15 percent) segments. And as expected, both PC and mobile phones will drive the market strongly in 2004.

In fact, the sweet spot in semiconductor growth for the next 12 months is still colored mobile phones with camera features. As MMS service becomes more popular, a lot of color-display cellphones with camera modules are observed. Displays will be at least 65K colors or higher in both in CSTN or TFT types, and the resolution of the camera module will range from VGA (640-by-480 pixels) to 1.3Mpixels (SXGA). Meanwhile, smart phones integrated with PDA functions will also be the favorite in the next 12 months.

To fulfill the market requirements, Hideyuki Yoshizawa, president of Renesas Technology Hong Kong Ltd, stated, "We at Renesas will provide solutions to meet the application side of mobile phones. Renesas is one of the color TFT driver suppliers in the world. We support both 64K and 262K color-TFT modules, as well as VGA-type CMOS camera modules. This year, 1.3Mpixel CMOS camera modules are set to be released. We will also provide a high-performance application processor called SH Mobile series MCU to take care of all multimedia functions. Renesas can provide a full range of multichip package memory in order to work with baseband chip and application processors."

Technology curve

As always, mobile phones require high integration and the smallest size of components. "Our product development policy is going along with this market requirement. For the application side, we offer middleware solution that can balance the system performance and development time. Customers can select the appropriate modules and develop their system in a reasonable time," Yoshizawa noted.

Moreover, high-performance MCUs will also be a major requirement in the fast-growing multimedia era, and embedded systems as well as SoCs will be the key technical trends. However, the biggest challenge is how to integrate the appropriate system block into the IC in a cost-effective and fast development way. The Middleware is one of the solutions.

Another market requirement is high-speed, low operating voltage and high system integration. They all mainly depend on IC technology in terms of process. Today, the most dominant process is 130nm, but will soon shift to 90nm and 65nm processes. Based on such evolution, more and more components will be integrated into one chip to achieve high system integration. Hence, customers can enjoy simple system design and production yield improvement.
