With the NCP1030 and NCP1031 monolithic switching regulators from ON Semiconductor, emerging applications such as 42 V automotive systems and Power over Ethernet (POE) devices, including IP phones and wireless access points, can have lower external component count, and reduced system costs, assembly time and board space.

The miniature, high-voltage NCP103x family of devices features both a power switch and a start-up circuit. It simplifies the generation of low power and secondary side bias supply voltages that are often required by dc-dc converters and/or 48V telecom systems by mitigating both the space and component-selection issues that have traditionally plagued designers.

Jeff Olsen, marketing director for Power Supply products, said, "With the implementation of the NCP1030, a single 3-by-4.9mm footprint device replaces a cumbersome system design that required a PWM controller, a 200V MOSFET in a large power package as the main power switch, a 200V start-up MOSFET, a supervisory circuit and up to 12 other components."

An optimized gate drive for the internal power switch reduces EMI, while the on-chip start-up regulator reduces external component count and can be disabled to reduce power consumption. The device features an internal current limit with adaptive Leading Edge Blanking (LEB), which eliminates the need for external sensing components.

Individual line under and overvoltage detectors ease transformer design, and an internal error amplifier is configurable for either isolated or non-isolated applications. The programmable operating frequency up to 1MHz allows for the reduction of the size of magnetic components, and the external frequency synchronization facilitates system integration.

The NCP1030 is offered in a Micro8 package and is priced at $1, while the NCP1031 in housed in an SO8 package and is available for $1.15. Both prices are for 10,000-unit quantities.
