Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association estimates that Taiwan's chip-foundry industry will attain over $3 billion for Q2, a 14.7 percent jump from the last quarter.

The growth was attributed mostly to the expansion of high-end process capacities at the 12-inch fabs of Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC).

According to the TSIA report, the island's chipmaking industry gained a 42.1 percent increase from the previous quarter, reaching $7.2 billion. The chip-foundry section grew 42.3 percent, registering a total of $2.6 billion, while its chip-design division climbed 38 percent, earning $1.74 billion. Its packaging sector raked in over $1 billion, reflecting a 30.4 percent growth, and its testing sector posted a 49.2 percent increase, to $372.7 million.

TSIA's study also showed that local second-tier foundry suppliers such as Technologies Inc., Analog Technology Inc. and Advanced Microelectronic Products Inc. will likely draw a combined 14.7 percent growth for the whole quarter due to the robust demand for LCD driver ICs.

DRAM suppliers are predicted to also enjoy considerable growth due to the expansion of their 12-inch fabs.
