Omron Corp. has developed an RFID reader/writer (R/W) compatible with both UHF (super-high frequency) and HF (13.56MHz) frequency bands. The company also announced that it has also developed a UHF band IC tag that utilizes proprietary IC chip ultrasonic bonding technology.

The new RFID R/W is equipped with antennae compatible with both UHF and HF frequencies making it capable of communication with IC tags conformed to EPC and ISO (18000-6, 18000-3) standards. Moreover, it adopts TCP/IP protocol for connecting to upper equipment, so it can easily be built into existing network environments.

Presently, Omron explained, UHF band is not authorized to be used for IC tag application in Japan, but towards the end of the year, radio laws and regulations will be modified and it is expected that application of IC tags in the 950MHz to 956MHz band will be permitted.

With the acceptance of UHF band IC tag usage, communication with IC tags over a wide range that had previously posed challenges will become possible, the company added.

On the occasion of this RFID R/W development, Omron entered into a technology license agreement with ThingMagic, a U.S.-based company and member of EPC Global.

The RFID R/W is projected for use at the FY2003 Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry supported Publishing Industry Wireless Tag Experiment, and it will be provided for various experimental trials led by governmental agencies planned for 2004.
