Asia's EDA industry: What has changed?

Driven by the increasing demand of design tools and technical support for design activities, Gartner Dataquest's 2004 forecast has revealed that Asia-Pacific will lead the EDA software and software-maintenance market with double-digit growth throughout 2008, on top of all the other areas. In the region, Taiwan has been the largest EDA market since 1998, followed by South Korea. EDA activity in China is also emerging since 1998, following India to have the second highest growth rate of 21 percent in the '03 EDA software and software-maintenance market.

Since 2003, Taiwan continued to focus on consumer electronics in electronic design. In a joint survey by Gartner Dataquest and EE TimesAsia, almost one-third of the respondents are designing consumer-electronic applications. Similar to last year, telecom/datacom is the second most popular design market, followed by computers/PC peripherals business.

Pure IC design is still a smaller cluster in both Taiwan and mainland China. As for process technology in Taiwan IC design, an increase in smaller process geometries can be observed, though the majority (40 percent) remained to be at the 0.35?m process. The 0.25?m IC design process decreased by 11 percent, making 0.18?m and below 0.13?m categories to move up by 4 percent individually.

The shift into smaller geometries is emerging in the mainland. Last year, 60 percent of ICs were designed at 0.35?m and above processes. It reduced to more than half at 28 percent in 2004. Thirty percent of ICs are designed with 0.18?m process, and there is an additional 9 percent in 0.13?m IC design.

ASIC design is the second most popular type of design in Taiwan. While in mainland China, ASIC design continues to be the second least popular.

After three years of expansion in gate count, ASIC design size tends to step back in Taiwan. In contrast, ASIC design size keeps on improving in the mainland. The largest design category is in the 1-2.5Mgates range, showing that the mainland is more advanced in ASIC design than Taiwan. We believe it is because ASIC design is a smaller cluster which might elevate the result, and the design talent migrated directly from foreign countries are more capable to design such high-end ASICs.

In Taiwan, system design remains to be the most popular for the past three years. In mainland China, system design surpasses PCB design to be the most popular type of design in 2004.

In the survey, we combined the merged companies within its parent companies to reflect the current EDA market status. In Taiwan, the top three popular vendors by the order are Cadence, Synopsys and Mentor Graphics. Novas Software, known as SpringSoft in Asia, is the fifth popular vendor on the ranking. Ansoft is also gaining momentum to move up on the ranking, while Altium falling drastically in the survey. In mainland China, the top three vendors are Cadence, Mentor Graphics and Synopsys. Many respondents have increased their EDA tool usage rate in mainland China--a sign that more tools are available to the design community in the mainland, which also matches its growing market share in the worldwide EDA market.
