Test equipment and data-acquisition supplier Saelig Co. is at it again, rolling out a new test gear. This time the company is debuting a USB-connected version of its TC-08 eight-channel thermocouple data logger. The new unit, dubbed the USBTC-08, samples at up to 10 readings/s, which is more than twice as fast as the company's previous serial port version TC-08.

What's more, Saelig's latest thermocouple logger, priced at about $470, packs built-in cold junction compensation, and covers the temperature range of -270C to 1,820C. As such, it can be used with most thermocouple types. Of course, being a USB peripheral, it's powered from the bus.

Measurements can be viewed in degrees C, or as a voltage level in mV. The unit is accurate to 0.2 percent (0.5C) and has a resolution of better than 0.1C for most thermocouples.

Additionally, thanks to plug-and-play USB, you can run multiple USBTC-08s on a single PC. That permits you to set up systems with as many as 80 thermocouples.

The USBTC-08 is also supplied with its PicoLog software that supports setup and viewing of gathered data. Using PicoLog, you can configure multiple USBTC-08s, set the sampling interval from 0.1s to as long as several hours, and set the maximum number of readings.

PicoLog also lets you perform mathematical operations on thermocouple outputs (such as performing a differential where you would output one temperature relative to another). Finally, the USBTC-08 data can be viewed in a spreadsheet or a graphas it's being recorded.
