Low-voltage regulators simplify modem, DSP designs

National Semiconductor's LM2852, the first member of the company's Simple Synchronous buck regulator family, is a high-frequency, step-down switching voltage regulator that can drive up to 2A loads with high line and load regulation for cable and xDSL modems, digital signal processors, DSPs, FPGAs and STBs.

"These highly integrated synchronous switchers combine high-efficiency, low-voltage operation and low component count for simplified design," said Paul Greenland, director of product marketing for the company's Power Management group. "The new Simple Synchronous products are as quick and easy to use as the rest of our Simple Switcher family, and all external components are fully specified with National's WEBENCH online power supply design tools."

The LM2852 integrates a PWM controller, power switches and compensation network to greatly reduce the number of components needed to implement a switching power supply. Designers need add only three capacitors (for the input, soft-start, and output filtering), and an output inductor for filtering.

The chip, working from a 2.7V to 5.5V input, delivers a customizable output voltage that is factory-programmable from 0.8V to 3.3V in 100mV increments. It is available with a choice of two switching frequencies, 500kHz and 1.5MHz. Soft-start and enable functions permit supply sequencing and reduce in-rush current.

The device, offered in a thermally enhanced TSSOP-14 package, is priced at $2.50 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The company will expand this family throughout the year with additional Simple Synchronous regulators for 1A to 3A applications. Designers can access the WEBENCH design tool online.
