Epson's new high frequency clock oscillator suits consumer apps

The XG-1000 is the first in a series of ultra-low jitter high frequency clock oscillators especially designed for consumer applications. It uses Epson's high-stability quartz SAW technology which is setting a new performance benchmark for the latest applications requiring high reference clock frequencies with ultra low jitter, said the press release.

SAW-based oscillators are well known to be the most reliable and stable oscillators while offering the lowest possible clock jitter available, compared to 3rd overtone and inverted mesa based designs. Another advantage over 3rd overtone oscillators is the absence of active dips present with SAW based oscillation. The active dips can lead to bit errors, which in effect will slow down the system performance.

Clock jitter, a common source of problems in high-speed designs, is minimized by the XG-1000 because it oscillates in a fundamental mode, providing the lowest jitter and noise rejection performance. The direct fundamental mode vibration assures that the jitter of the XG-1000 is among the lowest available for a high-frequency oscillator. System jitter compliance can be more easily achieved in the latest high-bandwidth driven consumer applications including: PC peripheral, digital electronics, digital home communication and games.
