The Nucleus real-time operating system (RTOS) and a suite of development tools from Accelerated Technology have been tailored for Renesas Technology Corp.'s SH7780 high-performance, superscalar, 32bit processor" target=_blank>risc processor.

The Nucleus RTOS serves as a scalable foundation for the high-performance processing requirements of many embedded designs. Other components in the tightly coupled software package are development and debugging tools, including Renesas' SuperH RISC engine C/C++ compiler. For those designs that adhere to the micro-ITRON interface specification, the Nucleus RTOS features a micro-iPLUS kernel in addition to its Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel.

For its part, the SH7780 processor touts an SH-4A CPU core with a maximum operating frequency of 400MHz to achieve a processing performance of 720MIPS. The processor's four-way set-associative cache memory is divided into two 32KB areas, one for instructions and one for data. The processor incorporates an on-chip 32bit PCI bus controller for connecting to LSI devices incorporating PCI interfaces and operating at either 66 or 33MHz. In all, the processor employs three kinds of 32bit buses: one that connects to double data rate synchronous DRAM, one for PCI bus connections, and a local bus for connecting to flash memory and SRAM.

Among the likely targets for the processor are game machines, digital home products, network control systems, car navigation systems, and industrial equipment.

Royalty-free, the Nucleus embedded software is sold as source code. License fees start at $12,495 per seat.
