Precision optics systems maker Leica Microsystems has just opened a new clean room at their Weilburg (Germany) facility. Replacing the previous clean room in Wetzlar, the new facility will also bring together the assembly lines previously maintained at two locations.

Built by M+W Zander, the new 594m2 clean room will be used for system assembly and integration, and for customer acceptance tests. The sensitive entrance, packaging and system integration areas correspond to clean room class 10,000; and the 328m2 assembly clean room is class 100,000.

Expected to be completed in only three months at a cost of about

Combining the clean rooms and centralizing assembly in Weilburg enables a more flexible and efficient use of manpower, reduces throughput time and improves quality. It also significantly lowers contamination risks.

To further enhance the use of qualified personnel - and gain a competitive advantage - Leica has begun to systematically qualify its workforce. Over half of the employees in Weilburg are either engineers or technical specialists. Thirteen people have already transferred from Wetzlar, and more are expected to follow.
