Akustica, SigmaTel team on microphones for PCs

Akustica Inc., a start-up developing acoustic components in silicon using MEMS manufacturing processes, has said it is collaborating with mixed-signal semiconductor supplier SigmaTel Inc. to promote a microphone array to computer manufacturers.

Akustica (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) offers a CMOS-MEMS silicon microphone which can be combined with SigmaTel's audio codec chips to address the market for PC-based voice-over-UP telephony. As part of the effort, Akustica and SigmaTel (Austin, Texas) have developed a digital microphone array reference design demonstrates the integration of multiple microphone chips into notebook computers.

The two companies are working together to promote a fully integrated digital microphone array to computer manufacturers. A microphone array has the advantage of being able to capture positional information and, through the use of digital signal processing, this can be used to suppress background noise or identify individual speakers in a group.

"As seen in real-time-communication programs like MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and Skype, speech-enabled applications are clearly gaining momentum and, together with SigmaTel, we will enable consumers to experience superior voice quality," said James Rock, president and chief executive officer of Akustica, in a statement. "Consistent with their reputation for innovation and creativity, SigmaTel is the first company to demonstrate a fully integrated and cost-effective digital microphone array solution for notebook computers."
