Spansion LLC, a joint venture between Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Fujitsu Ltd, is planning to bring forward the introduction of flash memory chips made using 65nm manufacturing processes from 2007 to 2006, according to an executive.

During a presentation on the companys 1Gb NOR flash memory, introduced on a 90nm process, John Nation, technical marketing manager, said the company would introduce flash memory products on 65nm process in 2006. This was at odds to the presentation which indicated the end of the first quarter of 2007 as the introduction date for 65nm manufacturing.

Were ahead of that, Nation said but declined to be more precise than 2006 on saying when the 65nm manufacturing would begin. Nor would Nation discuss whether Spansions first step would be to move the 1Gb design over from 90nm to 65nm or would introduce a higher capacity memory.

Were not communicating our size estimate for 65nm at this time, Nation said.

Spansion (Sunnyvale, Calif.) is manufacturing its 90nm 1Gb NOR flash memory chips at Fab 25 in Austin, Texas.
