Semiconductor sales in the Asia-Pacific are projected to grow by 69 percent between 2004 and 2008, reaching $150.4 billion in that year, according to an annual forecast of global semiconductor sales by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The overall growth projections for this region are by far the highest, according to the forecast.

Asia-Pacific sales are projected to grow 16.4 percent to $103.3 billion in 2005, more than any other region, according to the forecast. Sales in the Americas market are projected to grow by 3 percent in 2005, reaching $40.2 billion, while European market growth is forecast to be a nominal 0.1 percent, reaching $39.5 billion. Sales in the Japanese market are projected to decline 2.6 percent in 2005, settling at $44.6 billion.

SIA said the Asia-Pacific market is projected to grow 11.4 percent in 2006, reaching $115.1 billion, and 12.4 percent in 2007, reaching $129.4 billion.

Both the Americas market and the European market are projected to grow by roughly 30 percent between 2004 and 2008, each eclipsing $51 billion in that year. Growth rate in the Americas is projected to be 4.5 percent in 2006 to $42.1 billion, 8.7 percent in 2007 to $45.7 billion and 11.8 percent in 2008 to $51.8 billion, according to the forecast.

The forecast calls for European market growth of 4.9 percent in 2006 to $41.4 billion, 9.7 percent in 2007 to $45.4 billion and 12.3 percent in 2008 to $51 billion.

The Japanese market is projected to grow by 23 percent overall between 2004 and 2008, reaching $56.7 billion. The forecast calls for this market to grow by 5.2 percent in 2007 to $46.9 billion, 8.3 percent in 2007 to $50.8 billion and 11.6 percent in 2008 to $56.7 billion.

The SIA's annual forecast, released Wednesday (Nov. 16), projects a compound annual growth rate of nearly 10 percent for the forecast period, 2005 through 2008. The forecast calls for worldwide sales of semiconductors to reach $309 billion in 2008.
