Silicon wafers and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technologies are moving up and to the right.

Driven by 300mm technologies, the worldwide silicon wafer market is projected to see strong growth over the next few years. In total, the silicon wafer market is expected to grow 7.4 percent this year, from $8.202 billion in 2005 to $8.988 billion in 2006, said Dan Tracy, an analyst with the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) trade group.

The silicon wafer industry is projected to grow from $9.583 billion in 2007 to $10.698 billion in 2008, Tracy said.

SOI is expected to grow as well, especially thin-film technologies. Thin-film SOI is projected to grow from $263 million in 2005, to $376 million in 2006, to $516 million in 2007, to $632 million in 2008, he said.

On the other hand, thick-film SOI is expected to be flat. It is expected to grow from $84 million in 2005, to $90 million in 2006, to $91 million in 2007 to $94 million in 2007.

The overall materials market is expected to grow 7.2 percent this year, from $17.953 billion in 2005 to $19.240 billion in 2006.
