Several optical device makers have banded to develop new common specifications for optical devices including the SC connector, based on the 10Gbps Miniature Device Multi-Source Agreement (XMD-MSA).

The agreement will establish multiple, compatible sources of 10Gbps Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) and Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) devices embedded into 10Gbps MSA modules, designed for use in large capacity network and data storage systems. Companies complying include Avanex Corp., CyOptics Inc., Eudyna Devices Inc., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd, Opnext Inc. and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd.

This XMD-MSA specification covers optical devices that comply with 10Gbps interface standards, including 10GbE, 10Gb Fiber Channel and SONET OC-192. The specifications cover common mechanical dimensions, including the optical connector interface. Also covered are electrical interface standards, and common optical and electrical characteristics.
