Avago's PIN diode chips

Avago Technologies has launched three high-performance PIN diode chips in a low-cost RoHS-compliant, Pb-free SOD-323 plastic package. These devices are designed to reduce board space in wireless portable device applications.

The two-pin SOD-323 package comes with dimensions of 1.7-by-1.25-by-0.95mm, which is significantly smaller than the 3-by-2.5-by-1.1mm form factor offered by the three-lead SOT-23, and 2-by-2.1-by-1.1mm dimensions of the SOT-323 package.

The HSMP-389Z, HSMP-386Z and HSMP-381Z PIN diodes offer the same performance characteristics as the company's previous versions in SOT-23, SOT 143, SOT-323 and SOT-363 packages. All versions are specified for operation at up to 3 GHz and address wireless infrastructure, CATV, DBS LNB/multiswitch, mobile handset, cordless phone and WLAN applications.

The HSMP-389Z device is optimized for RF switching applications where low insertion loss, low series resistance at low current, and low capacitance are required. The HSMP-386Z PIN diode is suitable for low-distortion and low-current switching applications as well as attenuation applications that require low current or low-power consumption. The HSMP-381Z is optimized for low distortion and high-linearity attenuation.

The HSMP-389Z features low series resistance (Rs) of 3.8? at 1mA, 1.8? at 5mA, 1.5? at 10mA (typical at 100MHz); and low total capacitance (CT) of 0.20pF typical at a reverse voltage of 5V and 1MHz. The device offers a short carrier lifetime of 200 ns at a forward current (IF) of 10mA and a reverse current (IR) of 5mA.

The HSMP-386Z provides a Rs of 15? at 1 mA, 4.5? at 5mA, 1.5? at 10mA (typical at 100MHz), and a CT of 0.23pF typical at a 5V reverse voltage and 1MHz. The short carrier lifetime is 500ns at 50mA IF and 250mA IR.

The HSMP-381Z offers a Rs of 70? at 1mA, 18? at 5mA, 7? at 10mA (typical at 100MHz); and a total capacitance of 0.30pF typical at a 5V reverse current and 1MHz. The short carrier lifetime is 1,500ns at 50mA IF and 250mA IR.

For applications requiring two or more PIN diodes, the three-lead SOT-23 or SOT-323, the four-lead SOT-143 or the six-lead SOT-363 are still preferred choices, since they can incorporate up to four diodes in a single package to minimize board space, said the company.

The HSMP-389Z is priced at 11 cents each in quantities of 220,000; the HSMP-386Z is priced at 14 cents each in quantities of 180,000, and the HSMP-381Z is priced at 16 cents each in quantities of 150,000. These devices are available in 100-piece bulk packs and 3,000 pieces on 7-inch tape-and-reel.
