South Korean firm offers T-DMB system-in-package

South Korean fabless chipmaker Integrant Technologies Inc. said early this week it has developed a package-level decoder chip set that operates to Korea's mobile TV broadcasting standard called DMB. Trademarked as MTV311, the system-in-package (SIP) includes an RF tuner and a DMB baseband chip suitable for use in the terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) system. The two die are placed, together with passive components within a package measuring 10-by-10-by-1.3-mm.

The footprint of the MTV311 chip solution is one fifth the size of an existing offering that mounts the two chips and other components on a PCB.

"The MTV311, which we believe is the world's first of its kind, does not need any field tests because the functions of the Integrant-developed RF tuner chip seated on it have already been verified by major DMB phone makers," an Integrant spokeswoman said.

Integrant, a six-year-old fabless IC maker for mobile broadcasting systems, has begun mass production of the RF tuner chip, named ITD3010, for use in T-DMB-enabled terminals.

The ITD3010 features power consumption of less than 100mW and a package size of 6-by-6mm. The tuner uses a low-IF (intermediate frequency) architecture that is said to eliminate bulky external SAW filters. Integrant, which received funding from Intel Corp. in 2004, has also made successful inroads into the satellite DMB market in Japan.

The baseband chip carried by the MTV311 has been developed and successfully tested for volume production.
