Microchip Technology Inc. announced a family of low-power, low-voltage, 6bit digital potentiometers that are said to be cost and size competitive with mechanical versions.

Available in 5- and 6-pin SOT-23 and 2-by-3-mm DFN packages, the MCP4011-MCP4014 digital potentiometers can be used in handheld equipment and portable applications including sensor calibration and trimming, set-point control, test and measurement, industrial process control, consumer electronics and data acquisition.

The pots feature power consumption of 0.3A (typical) and 1.8V operation. Additional features of the digital potentiometers include integral non-linearity (INL) of 1/2 least significant bit (LSB) maximum, differential non-linearity of 1/2 LSB (maximum), end-to-end temperature coefficient of 100ppm (typical), and ratiometric temperature coefficient of 10ppm (typical). The devices operate in the extended industrial temperature range of -40C to 125C.

An evaluation board (MCP402XEV) is available for $15. In addition, Microchip offers the FilterLab 2.0 active filter design tool that simplifies active-filter design.
