Wind River Systems Inc. announced that its platform for consumer devices, Linux Edition, supporting Intel's newest processor family, codenamed Monahans, is now sampling to customers.

Wind River Professional Services will support the Monahans platform family, based on third generation Intel XScale technology, with specific optimizations, helping device manufacturers improve time-to-revenue by delivering reliable, high-quality solutions quickly and cost-effectively, said the press release.

According to the company, device manufacturers powering their next-generation handheld devices with a processor from the Monahans platform family can leverage the platform's capability to develop, deploy and manage innovative, highly differentiated product offerings. Wind River's Linux Edition promises complete assurance from the only commercial grade quality platform offering a "pristine-source," fully tested and validated Linux 2.6 implementation and a cutting-edge Eclipse-based development suite.

Wind River Professional Services also offers the Linux Edition extensions, including integration of the Monahans board support package and customizations to better utilize the capabilities of the Monahans application processor family. The Linux Edition also provides full access to the company's worldwide support organization allowing the customers to leverage a variety of support channels to get the help they need when they need it and where they need it.

"Handheld device manufacturers interested in developing and running device software faster, better, at a lower cost and more reliably can look to the combination of Wind River and Intel technologies for their devices," said John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River, in a statement.
