DSG solution targets STB, DTV manufacturers

Texas Instruments Inc. announced its Puma-based DOCSIS set-top gateway (DSG) solution for cable STB and DTV manufacturers. These DSG products enable multi-service operators (MSO) to deliver video, data and voice streams, as well as the necessary STB control features, over a single DOCSIS network.

In-Stat, a technology research firm, forecasted that the number of worldwide cable modem subscribers will reach 99 million by 2009. The firm also noted that DSG-enabled products will soon expand the reach of cable broadband services beyond the PC.

"As the competition for pay-TV and high-speed data service heats up, cable MSOs are solidifying their subscriber base by offering advanced services such as video-on-demand, digital video recording and even video dating services," according to Mike Paxton, In-Stat's cable industry analyst. "With DSG-based solutions, cable MSOs can rapidly install or update interactive applications and continue to meet the growing subscriber demand for advanced services."

The solution is based on its Puma family of cable modem solutions and is compliant with DOCSIS and CableLabs certification requirements.

The platform includes a reference design kit including both hardware and software development kits. The hardware development kit leverages the Puma TNETC460x DOCSIS cable modem chip with CableCard interface, and a legacy OOB (SCTE 55-1/DVS 178 and SCTE 55-2/DVS 167) transceiver. The platform comes with 10/100 Ethernet and USB 1.1/USB 2.0 ports. The TI DSG platform is currently available.
