AltaSens Inc. announced production availability of its 1/3-inch ProCamHD 2460 and 2462 sensors for deployment in high definition video (HDV) camcorders and HD cameras. Both 1.3Mpixel sensors generate progressive 12bit digital video at uncompromised 1280 x 720 resolution and 75MHz rate. The result is 720/60p HDV or 50Hz SXGA.

According to Les Kozlowski, AltaSens CTO and founder, the 2462 sensor delivers minimum SNR of 47dB at only 500 lux and f2.8 aperture while recording at 60Hz. This, Kozlowski claims, is better than high-end 3-CCD cameras that yield lower resolution at slower frame rates.

Supporting single-chip cameras, the 2462 sensor has a maximum power dissipation of 350mW that is said to lengthen battery life. The 2460 is the monochrome counterpart sensor with advanced microlens array for low-power 3-CMOS cameras. Both are said to deliver low noise via tapered reset, a patented technique for reducing noise and maximizing dynamic range. Each sensor has a 60Hz frame rate.

AltaSens is supporting 246X sensor evaluation and initial setup via an evaluation kit and its ProCEED software package. The evaluation kit comes with lens, cabling and frame capture board for use in a PC. The ProCEED software aims to simplify sensor programming while enabling real-time PC-based imaging and extensive sensor characterization.
