Study: Sony, Philips top LCD TV suppliers

Japan-based Sony Corp. topped LCD TV suppliers in revenue while Philips led in unit sales, according to the latest LCD TV market report by DisplaySearch Inc.

According to the report, Philips paced LCD TV unit sales with a 13.9 percent market share, but was fourth in revenue sales, while Sony topped suppliers in revenue with a 15.0 percent market share while being fourth in unit sales.

LCD TV shipments jumped 135 percent year-over-year while falling 14 percent quarter-to-quarter to 7.4 million units, DisplaySearch said. Revenue rose 114 percent year-over-year though fell 12 percent quarter-to-quarter, to $8.8 billion. The average diagonal rose 19 percent year-over-year and 2 percent quarter-to-quarter to 27-inch, reflecting the trend for larger screen sizes to become more affordable, said DisplaySearch.

In addition, 37-inch and larger LCD TVs saw their unit market share rise from 12 to 14 percent year -year-year, reflecting greater availability of large sizes as additional production capacity became available. Average selling prices, on the other hand, rose 2 percent quarter-to-quarter but fell 9 percent year-to-year, to $1,195.

LCD TVs overtook CRT TVs in the 30- to 34-inch range for the first time on a unit basis in Q1 and increased their share of the 40- to 44-inch market from 17 to 23 percent, stealing share from plasma and rear projection TVs, said DisplaySearch.
