Optical encoder offers wide resolution range

Avago Technologies has expanded its motion control product line with a low-cost ultra-miniature transmissive optical encoder module. This "one-size-fits-all" encoder is a good fit for industrial and motor control applications that require resolutions from 2,500 to 7,500 cycles-per-revolution (CPR).

With a 17mm diameter and height of 24mm in a top mounting package, the AEDA-3200 easily fits into an 18mm housed encoder. Available in five resolution options from 2,500 to 7,500 CPR, the encoder operates up to 1MHz, which is about twice the frequency of competing products. This allows the encoder to perform at a high cycle per revolution at a high RPM, said the company.

The module is designed for a variety of motors used in industrial and medical equipment applications. Some of the targeted applications which require high resolution, temperatures and frequencies include robotic arms, wafer handling machines, and fluid control in medical equipment.

The AEDA-3200 module features three-channel optical incremental outputs with an RS422 line driver for clean signal propagation to provide resolutions up to 30,000 CPR after 4x decoding. The integrated line driver eliminates signal loss up to 1,000 feet. The miniature device operates in temperatures ranging from -40C to 125C.

Designed as a modular package, the AEDA-3200 is an encoder module that comes complete with codewheel and sensor for easier design-in and assembly. It's touted as a lower cost option of the AEDA-3300 optical kit encoder that offers resolutions from 600 to 20,000 CPR.

Pricing for the AEDA-3200 ranges from $39 to $43 each in quantities of 1,000. Samples are available.
