Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer supplier Soitec SA said Thursday (July 6) it plans to build a new production plant in Singapore and expand its existing production base in France.

Soitec said it selected Singapore as the site for a new 300mm SOI fab, to be known as Fab 3. The company plans to invest about $446.5 million to build and equip a 4,000-square-foot cleanroom facility. The company said it expects to break ground on the project next month and to start production there in mid-2008. Once fully ramped up, Soitec said, the plant is expected to have the capacity to produce 1 million wafers per year and is expected to employ about 500 people.

"The establishment of our new state-of-the-art facility in Singapore's Pasir Ris Wafer Fab Park represents a key milestone for Soitecone that we believe will bolster our competitiveness on a global scale with the opportunity to have a dollar-based zone plant," said Andre-Jacques Auberton-Herve, Soitec president and CEO, in a statement.

Soitec said it plans to install two additional 300mm production lines at its second Bernin facility this year. The company said it also recently purchased, for about $14.2 million, 1,300 square meters of equipped adjacent cleanroom space from Memscap. The result will boost Soitec's potential maximum production capacity to an estimated 1 million 300mm wafers per year, up from its current annual potential of 720,000 wafers.

Soitec said it had already invested more than $446.5 million in the company's Bernin plants as of March. The company said total investment in the plants is expected to exceed $637.8 million and that the plants will eventually employee about 1,000 people.

Soitec said it would also hire at least 100 new researchers in connection with its joint venture NanoSmart project with CEA Leti.

"Our ongoing investments allow us to address volume markets and help revolutionize electronic systems," Auberton-Herve said.
