Keywords:Dave Bursky? MathStar FPOA? JPEG 2000 encoder?

Firmware that is claimed to turn the MathStar field-programmable object array (FPOA) into the fastest available JPEG 2000 encoder gives designers a high-performance solution for medical imaging, machine vision, professional video, military and aerospace systems, and high-performance digital imaging.

By leveraging the dedicated programmable objects (16bit function blocks, including arithmetic-and-logic units, multiplier-accumulators and register files) integrated into a regular configurable array, the FPOA can handle an input sampling rate of 200Mpixels/s for monochrome images and 100Mpixels/s for color images. Both have pixel depths of up to 12bits, said COO Dan Sweeney.

FPOAs can tackle applications that require higher throughput levels than FPGAs can deliver, especially in video and imaging, Sweeney said.

Able to operate at clock speeds of as high as 1GHz, the encoder can handle 250fps for an image size of 1,024-by-768 pixels; 190fps for 1,024-by-1,024 pixels; 150fps for 1,280-by-1,024 pixels; and 45fps for 2,048-by-2,048-pixel images.

Deliverables include a cycle-accurate simulation model, a testbench, the company's object hardware description language files (OHDL), and mapping files for the company's connection and assignment tool (Coast). The OHDL software contains structural and behavioral modules and supports hierarchies, macros and libraries to enable either top-down decomposition or bottom-up design.

The encoder firmware implements the JPEG 2000 compression algorithm based on the ISO/IEC 15444-1 standard. The programmable objects in the FPOA are interconnected by a two-tier interconnect structure that allows 1-GHz connectivity between nearest-neighbor connections as well as between nonadjacent objects though MathStar's Party Line connection scheme. The objects are also coupled with distributed local internal RAM, dedicated external memory controllers and a mix of high-speed and general-purpose I/O buffers.

The JPEG encoder firmware will be available in Q4 this year.
