austriamicro's new step-up DC/DC converter

austriamicrosystems has announced the expansion of its family of step-up DC/DC converters with the introduction of the AS1325, a high efficiency step-up DC/DC converter with fully integrated synchronous rectifier. Promising an efficiency of 96 percent, the new device is a suitable solution for battery powered portable applications that need 3.3V or 5V supply voltage.

Improving on the company's AS1320 and AS1321 DC/DC converters, the AS1325 offers increased output current, providing a supply voltage of 1.5V to 3.5V (for 3.3V output voltage) or 1.5V to 5V (for 5V output voltage). Supplied with less than 2V, the device is capable of delivering a 300mA output current at 5V output voltage or 185mA at 3.3V output voltage.

The new DC/DC converter features a shutdown mode where it draws less than 1A. In this mode the battery is connected directly to the output to enable direct battery feed-through. This enables the input battery to be used as a backup or as a real-time clock supply when the converter is off and eliminates the need for an expensive back-up battery. To ensure stable operation, the integrated "power on" reset circuitry enables the device to reset any type of microprocessor after power up to provide a stable start.

"The high output current combined with the low power consumption and high efficiency makes the AS1325 an ideal solution for battery powered devices like medical and diagnostics equipment, digital cameras, MP3 players, PDA's and smart phones, cordless phones and other handheld products," said Walter Moshammer, marketing director for standard linear at austriamicrosystems. "The outstanding efficiency of 96 percent helps to extend battery life of dual-cell battery powered devices."

The AS1325 is available in a 6-pin SOT23 package.
