Osram Opto Semiconductors has announced the Advanced Power TOPLED line of LEDs that incorporate ThinFilm technology. The company said its SMT LED portfolio now offers a wide range of choices for many applications.

Osram's patented ThinFilm technology promises high efficiencies, making blue, green and red LEDs for illuminated advertising and effect lighting even more striking. "Blue and green Advanced Power TOPLED in particular will open up new areas of application, and like the other color variants, can be used for area and effect lighting," said Ellen Sizemore, director for North America of Osram's LED and IR products group. "Whether they are integrated in signage or fitted directly on building facades, these LEDs provide impressive illumination."

The company claims the new LED series offers 50 percent more illumination than previous generations. At 140mA, the new devices have an output of 19lm in green and amber, 15lm in white and red, 14lm in yellow and 5lm in blue. They promise efficient lighting in small packages and a lifetime of up to 50,000hrs due to their silicone encapsulation. They are also said to achieve even higher performance due to their low thermal resistance.

The new LED products promise performance levels previously available only in higher power LED devices, Osram said, at the same time offering the low cost, small size and high efficiencies of traditional low-power LEDs. Compared to the incandescent light bulb, LED lighting solutions can provide the same amount of light with higher efficiency, and now with even fewer, more compact light sources. This saves energy while reducing maintenance costs, the company explained. The SMT package ensures that the LEDs are compatible with standard solder processes. Additionally, the devices meet the quality requirements of the automobile industry, is Pb-free and RoHS compliant.

The Advanced Power TOPLED is available in red (625nm), amber (617nm), yellow, true green, blue and white.
