OLED researchers report 12lumens/W power efficiency at 1,000 candelas/m2

Universal Display Corp. and Novaled AG have collaborated to develop a saturated red phosphorescent organic LED (PHOLED) with record specifications.

Researchers combined the partners' OLED technologies and materials to build a device that attains a record power efficiency of 12lumens/W at 1,000 candelas/m2 brightness. Luminous efficiency was 15 candelas/A at an operating voltage of less than 4V. Universal Display's phosphorescent OLED technology exhibits internal quantum efficiency as much as four times higher than conventional OLED technology, the company claims. Novaled claims its proprietary doping technology and materials enable OLEDs to operate at up to three times lower voltage than with other technologies.

The red PHOLED device registered peak external quantum efficiency of 16 percent, and has a projected operational lifetime of greater than 150,000 hours at an initial luminance of 500cd/m2.

Universal Display is working with Princeton University and has display development programs with other partners, including Tohoku Pioneer Corp., Samsung SDI, AU Optronics, DuPont Displays, Seiko Epson and Sony.
