Micron's RLDRAM II upgrade supports triple play services

Micron Technology Inc. has introduced the next-generation of its reduced latency DRAM (RLDRAM) II memory to meet the growing bandwidth requirements of triple play of communications services.

The company said it has increased the density of its RLDRAM II networking products from 288Mbits to 576Mbits and upped the speed from 400MHz to 533MHz, while reducing the latency from 20ns to 15ns. The combination of these three improvements allows for the efficient, fast transfer of information across a network, Micron said.

Networking companies are rolling out next-generation networking systems, increasing their network speeds to 10Gbps from 3Gbps. To meet these increased speeds, it is important that the memory technology also supports additional features such as triple play services, QoS, information multicasting, as well as traffic policing and security. RLDRAM memory is part of the solution to meet these exceedingly stringent market demands, according to the company.

"Today's networking environment is drastically changing as the market trends toward the combination of voice, video and data transmission over the Internet," said Raymond Fontayne, networking product marketing manager at Micron. "We are committed to providing our customers with high-performing, ultradense, low-latency memory solutions to meet their networking needs."

Micron is currently sampling to select customers with mass production expected in the Q1 2007.
