Samsung Electronics announced Dec. 20 that its OneNAND flash memory will be supported in new Qualcomm Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets.

Support for OneNAND flash, already available on a few MSM chipsets, will now be extended to a wider range of multimedia products. The deal combines OneNAND flash memory with MSM chip sets, including those for 3G phones and other new services from carriers, Samsung said.

As the industry moves to 3G-based services, OneNAND's 17Mbps performance allows streaming wireless downloads beyond the high-speed downlink packet access specification, according to Samsung.

The company is also pitching OneNAND for multimedia handset applications and for use as a nonvolatile buffer in hybrid hard disks. OneNAND is available with up to 2Gbyte capacity and will expand in 2007 to 4Gbyte using a 50nm manufacturing process, Samsung added.
