Rim Semiconductor Co. will partner with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Inc. (TSMC) in the manufacture of the Cupria 5001 copper transport processor. The chip will roll out from TSMC's Hsinchu Science Park facility in Taiwan.

"When a broadband chip becomes widely accepted, demand can easily outstrip the ability of a small foundry to supply product," said Brad Ketch, CEO of Rim Semi. "By engaging with TSMC, we believe that we have set in place the ability to effectively support volume growth."

The processor is the first product in Rim Semi's planned family of copper transport processors and will be designed based on the company's proprietary Internet Protocol Subscriber Line (IPSL) technology. Aside from superior image quality, the Cupria processor is said to deliver more bandwidth over longer distances, increasing the total available market for triple-play services while lowering network costs.

Rim Semi has also selected a development partner to assist with the transition of its technology to TSMC. The partner's services will supplement the work of Rim Semi's current development partner, HelloSoft of San Jose, California, and Hyderabad, India, as well as its own engineering staff at its design centers in Portland, Oregon and Kanata, Ontario, Canada.
