Optical isolators from Optek Tech

TT electronics Optek Technology has developed a family of optical isolators suitable for dust-contaminated environments. Designated the OPI1270, OPI1280 and OPI1290, these isolators, consisting of a visible red LED with phototransistor or Photologic sensor, transfer data through a plastic flexible cable.

"These isolators were designed for applications that require high voltage isolation between input and output, as well as signal communication over short distances," said Alan Bennett, VP of sales and marketing for Optek Technology. "With high noise immunity and a heavy duty opaque housing to shield the optical signal from dust, the isolators are ideal for industrial, medical and office equipment."

Able to mount each end of the isolator at different locations in the system, the design of the new optical isolators maintains good data transmission characteristics while being available in a variety of custom lengths.

The OPI1270 and OPI1280 isolators feature a visible red LED and a phototransistor sensor, while the OPI1290 isolator features a visible red LED and a Photologic totem-pole output sensor. In all three devices, the LED and sensor is housed in separate opaque molded plastic housings and coupled by a plastic flexible cable.

The isolators feature an isolation voltage of more than 20kV with 1.27mm lead spacing. Power dissipation rating is 100mW, with an operating temperature range of -40C to 100C. Optek will also produce devices to meet customer requirements. Custom electrical specifications, wire and cabling, and connectors are also available.

Typical pricing for the fiber optic isolator family devices starts at $3.45 each in quantities of 1,000 pieces. Production quantity lead times, if stock is not available, are from six to eight weeks.
