Mobile multimedia chip offers 100hrs playback

NXP Semiconductors has launched a music phone solution having an ability to deliver up to 100hrs of playback time. Besides providing the benefits of a portable music player, this solution also allows the consumer to use standard mobile phone functionalities like high-speed download of content simultaneously.

Independent co-processor
The new Nexperia mobile multimedia processor, PNX0150, functions as an independent co-processor and provides the parallel computing power and efficiency for the music phone application. The co-processor enables the phone to have an access to the storage media while playing and recording music, thereby improving battery life significantly. When combined with Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5210, which is already capable of delivering more than 20hrs of playback time, the PNX0150 increases play time by almost 300 percent to 70hrs while maintaining 5hrs of talk time, 750hrs of standby time and 9hrs of video playback.

The PNX0150 can be used as an add-on to most mobile phone platforms to deliver music player application on their devices. With an additional footprint of less than 70mm?, this co-processor has optimized interfaces to facilitate integration with the host processor. This reduces the overall development and integration costs for OEMs and ODMs, while improving time-to-market.

"NXP co-processor PNX0150 provides an ideal solution for consumers to enjoy longer, quality playback on their music phones at low power."

Software stack
The PNX0150 comes with a complete software stack built-in for application modes (typically found in portable music players), including content management, playlist support and playback/skip modes and sound enhancements features such as bass boost and graphic equalizers. It supports the latest standards in Digital Rights Management (DRM) as well as a range of audio encoders and decoders, including MP3, WMA, AAC, e-AAC+, PCM and ADPCM, for playback and recording of music in multiple formats. Depending on the requirement, PNX0150 can also be embedded with a high-speed USB controller, ADCs and DACs, headphone amplifier and an analog radio bypass.

Based on the availability of PNX0103, the PNX0150 processor is expected to be sampled by 2H this year.
