Nokia Siemens JV targets wireless, fixed comms arenas

Nokia Siemens Networks, the joint venture of Nokia and Siemens, eyes opportunities in both the wireless and fixed communications markets as it starts operations.

Aside from its Services Business Unit, the new company has five business unitsthe Radio Access, Broadband Access, Service Core and Applications, IP/Transport and Operations Support Systems divisionswhich provide a full range of products and applications for fixed, mobile and converged networks. The company officially began operations April 2.

According to Nokia Siemens Networks CEO Simon Beresford-Wylie, the company has its eyes set on the top industry post. "We have a clear objective... We want to be the number one company connecting the world through seamless connectivity of mobile and fixed communications," he said. Based on 2006 pro-forma revenues, the new company ranked third in the industry.

To carry on its mission, Nokia Siemens Networks will tap its R&D teams to focus on developing 'best-in-class' products for next-generation fixed and mobile network solutions. One of the company's R&D teams demonstrated the 'first' Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access solution in 2006.

In fixed access, the research teams transmitted data at 10Gbps via an optical access network, which is four times faster than the previously possible rate. Recently, a 10 x 111Gbps native transmission was also achieved over 2,400km using a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) infrastructure originally designed for 10Gbps transmission. This shows that operators can migrate to 100GbE services per wavelength using their existing optical infrastructure.

According to Nokia Siemens Networks, tapping available commercial solutions like IMS, MSC Server System and Internet HSPA and combining those with its own R&D capability, can help the company further gain inroads in the communications market.

Recognizing the growing trend in Internet-based services, Beresford-Wylie said the company aims to bring Internet and connectivity to many people by 2015. "We will find new ways to lower the cost of connections, particularly in the large emerging markets. As Nokia and Siemens said when announcing the new company on June 19, 2006, we will seek estimated cost synergies of $2 billion annually by 2010 to build a strong, competitive Nokia Siemens Networks."
