Vibration transmitter eases displacement monitoring

Wilcoxon Research, a Meggitt group company, has introduced its iT230 vibration transmitter with a displacement output for online monitoring of machinery case vibrations. An extension of the company's Intelligent Transmitter (iT) series, each iT series transmitter is user-customized for specifications such as measurement of acceleration, velocity or displacement; frequency banding and selectable full scale displacement in standard or metric units.

The iT230 makes it possible to mount a velocity sensor, such as Wilcoxon's 793V or 797V, to the bearing case and obtain machine vibration information in terms of displacement. The iT230 converts vibration sensor signals to proportional 4-20mA output for use in existing PLC/DCS networks. Raw velocity vibration data is also available from a BNC connector on the front of the DIN-rail mounted module for use with portable vibration analyzers.

The iT230 outputs 4-20mA data in for rms, peak, true peak, and true peak-to-peak. Full scale displacements of 0.254-, 0.508-, 0.635- and 2.540mm are available. The transmitter also features a programmed frequency band with a 2-pole high-pass filter and an 8-pole low-pass filter for low-noise performance.

The iT series also includes the iT Alarm with three programmable relays to monitor set-point limits. Alone or in conjunction with a PLC or DCS, the iT Alarm provides immediate notification if a machine's vibrations exceed acceptable levels. The iT Communications Module simplifies data acquisition and analysis by sending digital vibration data directly to any computer with an RS232 serial port. Free VibeLink online monitoring software is available from any desktop PC.

The key advantage of the iT230 is eliminating the need for an expensive proximity probe that requires a precision hole drilled directly into the bearing housing to measure displacement, which saves money and simplifies installation, said Wilcoxon. Although it is not the same measurement as with a proximity probe, it provides useful bearing cap displacement measurements, added the company.
