The Korea Wireless Internet Standardization Forum (KWISF) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) in Seoul to spearhead the standardization of WIPI or Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability. This is according to a Korea Herald report, citing Korea's Information Ministry.

According to KWISF, which created WIPI, the standard contains specifications for mounting and implementing applications downloaded via wireless Internet on a mobile handset. The platform is based on Sun's Java technology but also supports binary application runtime environment to help mobile phone subscribers send and share mobile applications including games and multimedia content regardless of operators and devices. In April 2005, WIPI was mandated as a standard platform in Korea through the Telecommunication Technology Association.

Commenting on the new initiative for the platform, a Ministry official said, "Exports of WIPI will be facilitated now that the two organizations agreed on standardization." He added, "Local wireless Internet solution providers will benefit from the agreement."

Both KWISF and OMTP plan to cooperate in developing mobile platforms and common strategies in global markets based on the standard. In line with this, the Ministry plans to hold an annual Open Mobile Alliance meeting in August, according to Korea Herald.

KWISF consists of domestic wireless operators and handset makers, including SK Telecom, KTF, LG Telecom, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute. Meanwhile, the members of OMTP are global wireless carriers such as Cingular of the United States, Telefonica of Spain and Vodafone of Britain.

At present, WIPI is being adopted by Helio, a North American wireless operator, according to the KWISF Website. The platform is under technical discussion for application in some countries, including China, Taiwan, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Israel. Copies of the standard are available at the WIPI Website.
