Inverter controllers improve lamp's light output by 25%

O2Micro offers a family of intelligent lighting products that are unique, high efficient, CCFL backlight inverter controllers. The family, which includes OZ960, OZ961, OZ970, OZ971 and OZ963 models are claimed to enhance designs for new, single-stage, next-generation inverter modules that drive a CCFL backlight. The inverter ICs implement O2Micro's patented single-stage inverter architecture, which improves the lamp's light output by 10-25 percent per watt of input power.

The inverters also employ O2Micro's patented PWM output drive architecture with zero voltage switching (ZVS) technology. The ZVS technique enables the design of efficient, low-loss CCFL inverter circuits.

Each device converts a DC source to a high-voltage, high frequency quasi-sine wave required to ignite and operate a CCFL, and are ideal for driving various sizes of LCD backlight lamps, currently being designed into next generation LCD displays, which include monitors, TVs, notebooks and GPS applications.

Intelligent design
The OZ960/OZ961/OZ970/OZ971 support a wide-range voltage input applications and feature built-in intelligence to manage ignition and normal operation of CCFLs. The group has 85 percent efficiency vs. typical 70 percent efficiency of conventional designs and provides internal open-lamp and over-voltage protections.

The OZ960/961 models have an integrated burst mode control, and wide dimming range (10-100 percent).

The devices have simple and reliable two-winding transformer design and support multiple CCFL lamps.

The devices, which have low stand-by power, have a constant-frequency design that eliminates interference with LCDs.

Meanwhile, the OZ963 supports single Li-ion battery operation from 2.5-5V as well as floating and grounded secondary designs. It eliminates leakage current when used in a floating secondary design. The part provides 90 percent efficiency vs. typical 70 percent efficiency of conventional designs. OZ963 has a regulated striking voltage, internal open-lamp and over voltage protections as well as integrated burst mode control and wide dimming range.

The device also features simple and reliable two-winding transformer design and a constant-frequency design that eliminates interference with LCDs. The part has low stand-by power.
