Qualcomm says 'no deal' to Broadcom settlement offer

Qualcomm Inc. declined Broadcom's settlement offer of a $6 royalty fee for each mobile phone affected, according to a Reuters report.

Broadcom VP of intellectual property litigation David Rosmann said that the company's offer was around 2-2.5 percent of the price of each handset.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) last month banned imports of Qualcomm phones containing chips that were said to infringe on Broadcom patents. The infringed patents were for a technology that extends the battery life.

Qualcomm subsequently sought a presidential veto on the ban. It also requested the suspension of the exclusion order of the ITC, but was turned down.

Qualcomm's rejection of Broadcom's offer won't be the end of negotiations between the companies, Rosmann said. He added negotiations with Qualcomm are likely to continue over a wider range of disputed patents.
