Supercapacitors enable high-temperature operation

CAP-XX Ltd has expanded its product line with the high-temperature HS and HW series supercapacitors. These devices feature a higher-boiling-point electrolyte that extends the operating and storage temperature from 75C to 85C, and operating voltage from 4.5V to 5.5V.

The HS and HW supercapacitors offer long-life performance at up to 2.75V in single-cell versions, and 5.5V in dual-cell versions with the two cells connected in series. All devices operate from -40C to 85C. Pulse current for a single pulse is 20A, RMS current is 4A. The supercapacitors deliver power densities as high as 71.5KW/litre and energy densities up to 5.5KJ/litre (or 1.5Wh/litre).

The HW series features a 28.5mm x 17mm footprint and provides high capacitance of up to 0.4F at 5.5V with an equivalent series resistance (ESR) as low as 100m at 5.5V in a thin package. The HS series features a 39mm x 17mm footprint and offers high capacitance up to 0.7F with ESR as low as 55 m at 5.5V in a thin package. The low-profile prismatic packages may be soldered or ultrasonic welded to pads on a PCB.

The HS and HW series supercapacitors may be used in a variety of applications including mobile and wireless devices that require an increased environmental operating range and/or a higher voltage rating.

The supercapacitors are said to work reliably in devices where nearby components can get very hot such as RF power amplifiers, which can reach 120C during transmission, as well as in devices which are exposed to environmental high temperatures such as a mobile phone left on a car's dashboard in direct sunlight.
