Universities worldwide stand to gain from $15 million worth of medical technology research funds to be granted by Texas Instruments Inc. TI says the funding will run for several years and support research and development in areas such as personal medical devices, implantables, medical imaging, wireless healthcare systems and biosensor technology.

The projects and universities to benefit will be chosen by TI's Medical Business Unit.

The company says the initiative builds on its devices and technology being used advancements in the medical field, including portable imaging, wireless communications for patient monitoring, retinal prosthesis and DSP-based robotics to improve quality of life for amputees.

"TI has always been at the forefront of technology research and we are very excited to partner with universities worldwide to help develop the next-generation of medical electronics that will allow our customers to improve the quality of healthcare and life," said Kent Novak, vice president of TI's medical business unit, in a statement.

Novak added many emerging medical systems are now utilizing semiconductor advances in the wireless and cellular sector, such as ever tighter integration and lower power requirements. This has resulted in improved patient monitoring in hospitals and feature-enhanced personal care devices, and has contributed to the modernization of healthcare systems in developing countries.
