16bit MCUs with on-chip flash up system performance

H8S/Tiny Series

Renesas Technology Corp. has unveiled the H8S/Tiny Series as a low-end product lineup in the H8S family of high-performance 16bit MCUs. In the initial phase, 24 models are released in three groups comprising the 64-pin package version H8S/20103 group, and the 80-pin package version H8S/20203 and H8S/20223 groups.

The H8S/Tiny Series incorporates functions for reducing the CPU processing load and improving ease of use, including an event link controller and peripheral I/O mapping controller as first-time functions for Renesas Technology, that simplify the development of high-performance products, together with a rich set of peripheral functions that enable lower product prices to be achieved.

Product details
The H8S/Tiny Series uses a high-performance H8S/2000 CPU core, enabling maximum 20MHz operation at a power supply voltage of 2.7-5.5V, and incorporates 128- or 96Kbytes of flash memory for program storage plus two 4Kbyte blocks of data flash for data storage. Using data flash makes it possible to cut back on the use of external dedicated data storage memory and reduce the number of parts.

An on-chip event link controller and peripheral I/O mapping controller are also provided as first-time functions for Renesas. The event link controller enables the CPU processing load to be reduced in the event of an interrupt, enabling higher product performance and lower current consumption, while the peripheral I/O mapping controller enables MCU pin functions to be changed flexibly according to the board, providing the user with greater freedom in board designs.

The H8S/Tiny Series also includes peripheral functions such as the DTC (data transfer controller) and DAC provided in current H8S Family products, and the high-performance timer, SCI, provided in the H8/300H Tiny Series and R8C/Tiny Series, enabling easy transition to the new series.

Also provided is a high-precision, high-speed on-chip oscillator that helps reduce system costs by cutting back on external resonator use. The oscillation precision ranks in the industry's top class, being within percent for a temperature range of -20C to 85C and a power supply voltage range of 3-5.5V. At the 40MHz oscillation frequency, application system control precision can be improved by operating the 16bit timer at high speed, enabling high application system performance to be achieved.

The above features are common to all three groups. The main differences between the groups are as follows.

a. H8S/20103: 64-pin package, 8-channel ADC

b. H8S/20203: 80-pin package, 12-channel ADC

c. H8S/20223: 80-pin package, 16-channel ADC

The E8a on-chip debugging emulator is available as IDE, enabling a debugging environment to be constructed at low cost. The E8a can be used as a flash memory writer and emulator. E100 full-spec emulator support is also planned, allowing the user to select the most suitable emulator for a particular purpose.

Applications include home electrical products, industrial equipment, security devices and OA equipment.

Sample shipments will begin January 2008 in Japan. Pricing ranges from $3.79 to $4.45.
