Increased DRAM figures prompt SIA to revise forecast

Keywords:IC growth? DRAM sales? semiconductor market?

Correcting a major forecast snafu, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has revised its worldwide semiconductor sales figures for 2007, citing better-than-expected DRAM figures.

The data reflects upward revisions in the DRAM sales data for the period January through September 2007 made by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS).

It is unclear how the WSTS!or SIA!could make such a blunder. The groups did not give an explanation. For the year to date period (January through November 2007), DRAM sales reached $1.35 billion!or 4.8 percent higher than previously reported, according to the SIA.

As a result, for the same period, total semiconductor sales are at $1.35 billion!or 0.6 percent higher than previously reported. January through November 2007 sales reflect 3.4 percent increase over same period in 2006.

December 2007 sales figures!as well as full year 2007 data!will be released by SIA on Jan. 31.

With the new figures, the SIA may have to revise its forecast!again. A recession in the semiconductor market is unlikely in the near term, said the SIA, which in November saw worldwide chip sales rising a modest 3 percent in 2007, followed over the next three years by stronger, though, still single-digit improvements.

In November, SIA said it expects global IC sales will improve to $257.1 billion from $247.7 billion in 2006, a downward revision of its forecast for a 10 percent increase made at the beginning of the year.

At that time, the WSTS also revised its IC forecast. Global sales of semiconductors is projected to increase by 3.8 percent to $257.2 billion, according to the WSTS, which had revised upwards its previous forecast for 2.3 percent growth for 2007, made in May.
