150Mbit/s fiber optic transceiver supports MOST Rev 3.0

MLX75605

Melexis has developed the MLX75605, a single-package solution for a 150Mbit/s fiber optic transceiver dedicated to Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) Rev. 3.0 enabling access to the newly defined MOST150 PHY. MOST is the de-facto standard for multimedia and infotainment networking in the automotive industry.

The MLX75605 comes in a 24-pin SOIC package compatible with lead free SMD processes. The transceiver includes integrated ferrule receptacles for both receiver and transmitter pigtails with high optical coupling efficiency. Light output is eye safe.

The device embeds a 650nm light source, a 150Mbit/s driver IC and a 150Mbit/s monolithic receiver IC. The LED driver IC includes on-chip calibration circuitry, which allows trimming the transmitter light output. In this way the light output is within a narrow range over the entire temperature range -40C to 95C, as required for automotive infotainment networks.

The 150Mbit/s receiver part consists of a PIN photo diode, TIA and end amplifiers integrated into one single die. The monolithic receiver IC enables immunity against electromagnetic disturbances. The 24-pin SOIC package can be handled by conventional SMD pick and place machines and is fully compliant with lead free reflow SMD soldering processes.

Piet De Pauw, manager of Melexis' business unit optical data communication, stated, "With the introduction of these innovative fiber transceivers we are strengthening Melexis' leading position in optoelectronic IC's for automotive applications. We are proud we are amongst the first to develop a 150Mbit/s MOST. In addition, by offering this fiber optic transceiver in a real SMD package, we are offering a solution which reduces significantly the cost of ownership for our customers."

The monolithic receiver IC (MLX75603) and the (RC) LED driver IC (MLX75604) are also available in die form. The MLX75605 is priced at $5.69 at 100,000-unit quantities.
